2002.07.04, Harrisburg, TMI + fireworks

We spent a few days at my Mom's house in Harrisburg. Desperate to get a close up view of Three Mile Island, we drove into Highspire, looking for a good angle. We eventually found one and parked in a lot off of a road that is parallel to the Susquehanna River.

After spending a few minutes looking around, and unmarked vehicle parked diagonal to mine and waited. We interpreted this to be some type of military operation, calmly walked back to my car, and drove away. We were tailgated by a truck for a mile or so down the road. I remained focused, ready to make a run for the Canadian border if anything went down. But when I looked up again, the truck had disappeared.

That night, we drove into Hershey and watched the fireworks. I hadn't done this since I was a youngster, and found it quite enjoyable. I imagined what it would be like to see such bright lights in a battle, like that scene in Apocalypse Now when Lance drops acid at the Do-Lung bridge. I wondered if, in our post-911 war-crazed world, I would ever have to experience such a thing. The traffic afterward was unbearable, so we sat on my car and waited for 45 minutes or so until things had cleared up a bit.
